A need for new type of fundamental engineers to work in the new sectors of aviation science and technology arose in Russia in the early 20th century. An outstanding Russian scientist the founder of aerodynamics Professor Nikolai Zhukovsky initiated the foundation of scientific and educational centres to conduct the necessary research and training of scientists and engineers for the industry’s development. Under the patronage of his follower, an outstanding scientist and teacher Boris Yuriev, Aeromechanical Department was founded at the mechanical faculty of MVTU (Moscow Higher Technical School). It was converted into Aeromechanical Faculty in 1929. On the 20thof March 1930, it was decided to split MVTU into five specialised engineering schools, Higher Aeromechanical School (VAMU) being one of them. In the spring of 1930, the first cohort of students was enrolled in the school. The number of students at this period was about 450. The classes were held in two and even three shifts.
In August 1930 the School was renamed the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI).
EDUCATION
Multi-level training system is implemented within the framework of continuous education system in the University.
Applicants were enrolled in 2022 by 33 areas of bachelor's training, 23 areas of master's training, 8 specialties.
In MAI 15 areas of training for specialists of the highest category are accredited, as well as provision of educational services within the framework of additional professional education for more than 100 programs for high-tech industry companies is licensed.
INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION
The University educates foreign students from 9 CIS and 74 far-abroad countries. Major agreements were signed with the countries of Southeast Asia region (Malaysia, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam), as well as with China, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, India, Egypt, South Africa and others.
One of the most promising areas of MAI international activity is the launch of educational programs for foreign students in English.
Currently, the university is implementing programs in the following areas: "Aircraft Engineering", "Aircraft Engines", "Missile Systems and Cosmonautics", "Avionics and Electrification of Engineering Systems" – the courses are lectured in English.
CAMPUS
MAI environment creates all the necessary conditions for effective scientific and educational activities, sports, creativity and self-development.
The campus that hosts more than 7000 people, new and renovated public spaces, co-working spots, cafes, sports grounds – the infrastructure of the university is constantly being improved. Modern laboratories, full-scale samples of equipment, flight simulators and our own supercomputer make it possible to develop the most breakthrough competencies in MAI.
The aviation industry is in constant search of the perfect aircraft. Significant breakthroughs are expected in this area, and it will be of growing importance in the future.
The school's curriculum includes such disciplines as spacecraft and rocket systems, flight dynamics and control, structural strength of spacecraft, and thermal control.
The curriculum combines the best traditions of the Russian engineering school and the most advanced approaches to the design and operation of different types of engine systems.
The program and its subject areas are tailored to an aerospace context, ensuring that the students' skills are developed to the most technologically advanced level.
